As recognized leaders in math pedagogy, teacher quality, and student achievement, the Conceptua Educator Advisors help to shape the development and implementation of our fractions software and provide support to our growing community of educators.
Nora Ramirez is a retired faculty member from Arizona State University and Past President of TODOS, an organization that advocates for equitable and high quality mathematics education for all students, particularly Hispanic/Latino students. Nora conducts professional development workshops across Arizona.
In addition to her current participation in our community, Nora has helped our development efforts in various ways, including helping us to be selective and systematic with the use of mathematical and process language in our activities. Robyn Silbey holds an MS in Elementary Mathematics Education from
McDaniel College and a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland, College Park. She worked as a consulting Math Coach for 25 years
at Montgomery County Public Schools, MD.
Robyn has served in the Teacher Training Corps for the USDOE and on the Editorial Panel of Teaching Children Mathematics, an NCTM periodical. She is an expert in professional development that supports raising teacher quality and student achievement, as well as the implementation of Singapore Math strategies. Robyn writes books, journals magazine articles, and other supplemental math materials. She visits campuses around the country and presents workshops at state, national, and international conferences.

Matthew Press is an educational technology expert focused on helping students with disabilities make the best use of technology to achieve their academic objectives. An occupational therapist by training, Matthew is currently the Assistive Technology Coordinator for the Pendergast School District in Phoenix, AZ. He has a Masters in Health Science from the University of Florida, and a RESNA credential. He has taught courses in assistive technology at the university level and presented nationally on technology and learning.
In the area of mathematics, Matthew has helped manage and support a large math research project involving over 400 students using interactive math software in 20 classrooms across 10 schools. He is a state level advisor regarding the use of assistive technology to support mathematics instruction and advises Conceptua Math on software accessibility issues.
These leaders in mathematics professional development played a critical role in the development of our Premium activity sets. They also contributed their own support sections within our Lesson Resources.
Julie McNamara, Ph.D., is co-author of Beyond Pizzas and Pies..., a book about fractions featured on this website. Her doctoral thesis was on misconceptions in fractions in elementary and middle school students. Julie provided guidance in the activity sequence and problem types. She helped us create activities that would lead to students developing a deep understanding of the many meanings and representations of fractions. Julie provides additional tips for teachers on the on common misconceptions held by students and what to do about them in her section of the teacher resource materials, Heads Up: Common Misunderstandings.

Barbara Dougherty, Ph.D., is the Director for the Center for Excellence in Science, Mathematics & Engineering Education at Iowa State University. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Board and is widely published. Barbara assisted in the development of a careful sequence set of activities supported by research on fraction instruction and best practice. Barbara provides tips on critical understandings that teachers need to highlight in their teaching in her section of the teacher resource materials, Essential Understandings for Teachers.
