It's another school year and the other day I got to work with a great teacher who works with students with learning disabilities, as well as Tier II and III students in our RtI model.
I was helping her learn how to use her new interactive whiteboard and we began talking about some of her students who struggle with fractions, which led to a trip to www.conceptuamath.com.
I signed in and showed her how to use the free tools as an instructional modality with her interactive whiteboard and she was excited. She was rattling off names of students who she thought would benefit from instruction with the tool. During the demo, I showed her how to use the speech button to support students through auditory comprehension (rather than poor decoding skills) and the onscreen number pad to fill in the blanks since she would be up at the board, rather than sitting near her keyboard.
Together we explored the different tools that are available to teach the big ideas of fractions and talked about a method for tracking the effectiveness of the tool with students who will also be using the subscription aspect to practice those concepts after instruction.
